Paragraph 5.6
Chapter 5: Of Divine Providence
As for those wicked and ungodly Men, whom God as a righteous Judge, for former Sin doth blind and harden; from them he not only withholdeth hisa Grace, whereby they might have been enlightned in their understanding, and wrought upon in their Hearts; but sometimes also withdrawethb the Gifts which they had, and exposeth them to suchc Objects as their Corruptions makes occasion of Sin; and withal,d gives them over to their own Lusts, and temptations of the World, and the power of Satan, whereby it comes to pass, that theye harden themselves, even under those means which God useth for the softning of others.f
a. Romans 1:24–25, 28; 11:7–8
Romans 1:24–25; Romans 1:28
1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
1:24 Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity for the dishonoring of their bodies with one another. 1:25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is forever worthy of praise! Amen. 1:28 Furthermore, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, He gave them up to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.
Romans 11:7–8
11:7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded 11:8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
11:7 What then? What Israel was seeking, it failed to obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened, 11:8 as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see, and ears that could not hear, to this very day."

d. Deuteronomy 2:30; 2 Kings 8:12–13
Deuteronomy 2:30
2:30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the Lord thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.
2:30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the LORD your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as is the case this day.
2 Kings 8:12–13
8:12 And Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child. 8:13 And Hazael said, But what, is thy servant a dog, that he should do this great thing? And Elisha answered, The Lord hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria.
8:12 "Why is my lord weeping?" asked Hazael. "Because I know the evil you will do to the Israelites," Elisha replied. "You will set fire to their fortresses, kill their young men with the sword, dash their little ones to pieces, and rip open their pregnant women." 8:13 "But how could your servant, a mere dog, do such a monstrous thing?" said Hazael. And Elisha answered, "The LORD has shown me that you will be king over Aram."

e. Psalm 81:11–12; 2 Thessalonians 2:10–12
Psalm 81:11–12
81:11 But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me. 81:12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels.
81:11 But My people would not listen to Me, and Israel would not obey Me. 81:12 So I gave them up to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.
2 Thessalonians 2:10–12
2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
2:10 and with every wicked deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that would have saved them. 2:11 For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion so that they believe the lie, 2:12 in order that judgment may come upon all who have disbelieved the truth and delighted in wickedness.

f. Exodus 8:15, 32; Isaiah 6:9–10; 1 Peter 2:7–8
Exodus 8:15; Exodus 8:32
8:15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said. 8:32 And Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.
8:15 When Pharaoh saw that there was relief, however, he hardened his heart and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said. 8:32 But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time as well, and he would not let the people go.
Isaiah 6:9–10
6:9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. 6:10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
6:9 And He replied: "Go and tell this people, 'Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.' 6:10 Make the hearts of this people calloused; deafen their ears and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed."
1 Peter 2:7–8
2:7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 2:8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
2:7 To you who believe, then, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone," 2:8 and, "A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense." They stumble because they disobey the word-and to this they were appointed.
