Paragraph 18.1

Chapter 18: Of the Assurance of Grace & Salvation

Although temporary Believers, and other unregenerate Men, may vainly deceive themselves with false Hopes, and carnal Presumptions, of being in the Favour of God, and State of Salvation, which Hope of theirs shall perish; yet such as truly believe in the Lord Jesus, and love him in Sincerity, endeavouring to walk in all good Conscience before him, may in this Life be certainly assured,a that they are in the State of Grace, and may rejoice in the Hope of the Glory of God, which Hope shall never make themb ashamed.c

  1. a. Job 8:13–14; Matthew 7:22–23

    Job 8:13–14

8:13 So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish: 8:14 Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider’s web.

8:13 Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so the hope of the godless will perish. 8:14 His confidence is fragile; his security is in a spider's web.

    Matthew 7:22–23

7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

7:22 Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 7:23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!'

  2. b. 1 John 2:3; 3:14, 18–19, 21, 24; 5:13

    1 John 2:3

2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

2:3 By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments.

    1 John 3:14; 1 John 3:18–19; 1 John 3:21; 1 John 3:24

3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. 3:19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. 3:21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. The one who does not love remains in death. 3:18 Little children, let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth. 3:19 And by this we will know that we belong to the truth, and will assure our hearts in His presence: 3:21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God, 3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God, and God in him. And by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us.

    1 John 5:13

5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

5:13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

  3. c. Romans 5:2, 5

    Romans 5:2; Romans 5:5

5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

5:2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 5:5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.
