Paragraph 19.5

Chapter 19: Of the Law of God

The Moral Law doth for ever bind all, as well justified Persons as others, to the Obedience thereof, and that not only in regard of the Matter contained in it, but also in respect of thea Authority of God the Creator, who gave it; neither doth Christ in the Gospel any way dissolve,b but much strengthen this Obligation.c

  1. a. Romans 13:8–10; James 2:8, 10–12

    Romans 13:8–10

13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. 13:9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

13:8 Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love. For he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. 13:9 The commandments "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet," and any other commandments, are summed up in this one decree: "Love your neighbor as yourself." 13:10 Love does no wrong to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

    James 2:8; James 2:10–12

2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. 2:11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. 2:12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

2:8 If you really fulfill the royal law stated in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing well. 2:10 Whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 2:11 For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker. 2:12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom.

  2. b. James 2:10–11

    James 2:10–11

2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. 2:11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

2:10 Whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 2:11 For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

  3. c. Matthew 5:17–19; Romans 3:31

    Matthew 5:17–19

5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

5:17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. 5:18 For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away, not a single jot, not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 5:19 So then, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do likewise will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever practices and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

    Romans 3:31

3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

3:31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Certainly not! Instead, we uphold the law.
