Paragraph 18.2

Chapter 18: Of the Assurance of Grace & Salvation

This Certainty is not a bare conjectural and probable Persuasion, grounded upon a fallible Hope, but an infallible Assurance of Faith, founded on the Blood and Righteousness of Christa revealed in the Gospel; and also upon the inwardb Evidence of those Graces of the Spirit unto which Promises are made, and on the Testimony of thec Spirit of Adoption, witnessing with our Spirits, that we are the Children of God; and, as a Fruit thereof, keeping the Heart bothd humble and holy.e

  1. a. Hebrews 6:11, 19

    Hebrews 6:11; Hebrews 6:19

    6:11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: 6:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

6:11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. 6:19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,

  2. b. Hebrews 6:17–18

    Hebrews 6:17–18

6:17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

6:17 So when God wanted to make the unchanging nature of His purpose very clear to the heirs of the promise, He guaranteed it with an oath. 6:18 Thus by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be strongly encouraged.

  3. c. 2 Peter 1:4–5, 10–11

    2 Peter 1:4–5; 2 Peter 1:10–11

1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 1:5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 1:10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 1:11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

1:4 Through these He has given us His precious and magnificent promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, now that you have escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 1:5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; 1:10 Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure. For if you practice these things you will never stumble, 1:11 and you will receive a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  4. d. Romans 8:15–16

    Romans 8:15–16

8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

8:15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" 8:16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

  5. e. 1 John 3:1–3

    1 John 3:1–3

3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. 3:2 Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when Christ appears, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is. 3:3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as Christ is pure.
