Paragraph 22.1

Chapter 22: Of Religious Worship, & the Sabbath Day

The Light of Nature shews that there is a God, who hath Lordship and Sovereignty over all; is Just, Good, and doth Good unto all; and is therefore to be feared, loved, praised, called upon, trusted in, and served, with all the Heart, and all the Soul and with all the Might. But the acceptable Way of Worshipping the true God, isa instituted by himself, and so limited by his own revealed Will, that he may not be worshipped according to the Imaginations and Devices of Men, or the Suggestions of Satan, under any visible Representations, orb any other Way, not prescribed in the Holy Scriptures.c

    Exodus 20:4–6

20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

20:4 You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath. 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 20:6 but showing loving devotion to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
