Chapter 25: Of the Civil Magistrate

Civil Magistrates being set up by God, for the Ends aforesaid, Subjection in all lawful Things commanded by them, ought to be yielded by us in the Lord, not only for Wrath but for Conscience-sake; and we ought to make Supplications and Prayers for Kings, and all that are in Authority^a that under them we may live a quiet and peaceable Life, in all Godliness and Honesty.^b

^13:5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. ^13:6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. ^13:7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
^13:5 Therefore it is necessary to submit to authority, not only to avoid punishment, but also as a matter of conscience. ^13:6 This is also why you pay taxes.
