Paragraph 8.4

Chapter 8: Of Christ the Mediator

This office the Lord Jesus did most willingly undertake, which that he might discharge he was made under the Law,a and did perfectly fulfill it, and underwent theb punishment due to us, which we should have born and suffered, being madec Sin and a Curse for us: enduring most grievous sorrowsd in his Soul; and most painful sufferings in his body; was crucified, and died, and remained in the state of the dead; yet saw noe corruption: on thef third day he arose from the dead, with the sameg body in which he suffered; with which he alsoh ascended into heaven: and there sitteth at the right hand of his Father,i making intercession; and shallj return to judge Men and Angels, at the end of the World.k

  1. a. Psalm 40:7–8; Hebrews 10:5–11; John 10:18

    Psalm 40:7–8

40:7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

40:7 Then I said, "Here I am, I have come-it is written about me in the scroll: 40:8 I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart."

    Hebrews 10:5–11

10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: 10:6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. 10:7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. 10:8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; 10:9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 10:11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

10:5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said: "Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You prepared for Me. 10:6 In burnt offerings and sin offerings You took no delight. 10:7 Then I said, 'Here I am, it is written about Me in the scroll: I have come to do Your will, O God.'" 10:8 In the passage above He says, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not desire, nor did You delight in them" (although they are offered according to the law). 10:9 Then He adds, "Here I am, I have come to do Your will." He takes away the first to establish the second. 10:10 And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 10:11 Day after day every priest stands to minister and to offer again and again the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

    John 10:18

10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

10:18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from My Father."

    Isaiah 53:6

53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

    1 Peter 3:18

3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

3:18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit,

20:25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he replied, "Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe." 20:27 Then Jesus said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe."

1:9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 1:10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

1:9 After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. 1:10 They were looking intently into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 1:11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven."

  10. j. Romans 8:34; Hebrews 9:24

    Romans 14:9–10

14:9 For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. 14:10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

14:9 For this reason Christ died and returned to life, that He might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. 14:10 Why, then, do you judge your brother? Or why do you belittle your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat.
